The World Congress is the world's leading event for intelligent transport systems, a week-long single event where new technologies, the latest research and innovative approaches to transport planning, transport management and transport operations are discussed and examined. This year's World Congress was hosted by ITS America, and ITS Canada in Montreal and for the first time it featured a Smart Cities Pavilion.
Representing New Zealand this year, a Christchurch City stand in the Smart Cities Pavilion, showcased both innovations and their experience of earthquake recovery, especially how technology played a big part. It was part of a continued effort to promote their aspirations to become a Smart City and attract international interest.
Sharing their insights and learnings from the World Congress in Auckland will be Mike Rudge (Stantec) and Blair Monk (Aurecon), in Christchurch Stephen Hewett (Beca) and Andrew Gurr (Fusion Networks).

Richard Harris is an internationally recognised expert in Intelligent Transport Systems. He has over 30 years’ experience and has held senior positions in leading companies (including ICC, AECOM, WSP, Logica and Xerox) and industry associations (including ITS(UK), ERTICO, PIARC, IRF, IBEC, MaaS Alliance….) and been at the forefront of ITS development and deployment.
Recently Richard joined HMI Technologies as their Director for Europe, his new role is to develop business in Europe and elsewhere to help exploit opportunities for the game-changing company innovations in transportation systems and services.
Richard was inducted into the ITS World Congress Hall of Fame in 2015 as the recipient of the life time achievement award. His citation read
‘An effective and charismatic champion and thought-leader for ITS for over 25 years who selflessly promotes ITS in general, without commercial considerations or bias. Known, respected, trusted and liked by ITS professionals all over the world, his commitment in worldwide organizations continues to inspire and benefit the international ITS community.’
Richard's presentation will cover the two different Mobility as a Service payment models, monthly subscription and "pay as you go". He will outline the business models that have been developed and are being tested as well as the challenges. He will discuss the role of the transport authorities and the policy objectives that will assist in establishing successful platforms.
Richard will also talk about the role of first and last mile transport options and various international developments. This is a great opportunity to hear from an international expert and quiz Richard on international experiences.
Steffen Schaefer is an internationally recognised expert for Smart Mobility and the Internet of Things. In his 20 year career, he worked for Siemens and IBM in innovation management and thought leadership roles, he has worked in Europe, China and the US and has recently joined HMI Technologies’ Executive Team appointed as HMI’s Chief Digital Officer.
With a degree in Business Computer Science, Steffen's career has seen him consistently working on leading edge solutions with customers primarily in Transportation and Logistics, Automotive, Telecommunications, and Public sectors. His work has always been in the Mobile Internet, Pervasive Computing, and Sensor Networks space - what today is called the Internet of Things. Steffen has deep experience in wireless networks, cloud, sensor data, data analytics, and agile software development.
In his presentation, Steffen started with a personal introduction and shared experiences that are relevant for the ITS community. He reflected on the state of the “Smart City” and lessons learned on his projects towards providing Mobility as a Service. He made predictions on what the key digital technologies will be for the ITS sector, and sketch a potential future scenario for connected, automated mobility and Mobility as a Service.
Preceding the 2017 ITS New Zealand AGM, Martin McMullan, Director of Connected Journeys at NZTA discussed the transport revolution which is both emerging and evolving. His presentation covered Mobility As A Service (MAAS), the emerging business models, associated technology and how they will impact our behaviour and our use of transport infrastructure.
Martin also discussed how changes at NZTA are preparing the agency for the "revolution" and the key pivot points that are guiding their decisions.

Wireless technologies are enabling vehicles to be connected to each and to roadside infrastructures and providing an important platform for innovations in intelligent transportation systems (ITS).
This presentation reports on the implementation of the Automotive test bed for Reconfigurable and Optimized Radio Access (AURORA) on the campus of the University of British Columbia (UBC), which is a part of the CDN$1.3M ACTIVE-AURORA network of test beds funded by the Asia Pacific Gateway and Corridor Initiative of the Canadian Government with the objective of providing a platform for investigating and implementing innovative Connected Vehicle (CV) technologies and helping to propel Canada to the forefront of ITS research.
The Laboratory for Wireless Networks and Mobile System (WiNMoS) has been engaged in research on wireless-enabled connected vehicle systems since 2008. Before we describe the motivations, development plan, and current implementation status of the AURORA test bed, we shall introduce CV technologies and applications, and review some of WiNMoS’ research results on wireless ITS.

The number of EVs in New Zealand recently surpassed 1000 vehicles, and is starting to rise dramatically. At this event we discuss the implications of a growing EV fleet have on the way New Zealanders use roads and vehicles.

Elizabeth Yeaman, General Manager Transport, Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority. Since joining EECA in 1996 Liz has worked in a variety of roles, covering local government, transport and renewable energy. Her current focus at EECA is on accelerating the uptake of electric vehicles in New Zealand.
She holds a Masters degree in Natural Resource Engineering and before joining EECA, worked in engineering and fuels consultancy. She is a member of the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand and the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (NZ). www.EECA.govt.nz
Steve West, CEO, Charge Net has held a fascination with Electric Vehicles since he was a child. Co-founder, owner, and director of Serato, the worlds leading digital DJ solution, Steve is passionate about promoting New Zealand business success, sustainability, and energy independence. His current focus is on accelerating the transition away from fossil fuel based transportation to Electric Vehicle transport.
Responsible for importing New Zealand's first Tesla Model S, Steve is an enthusiastic campaigner for the uptake of Electric Vehicles in New Zealand. He is spearheading the roll out of the largest rapid charging network in the southern hemisphere. Steve will be joined by Nick Smith, COO and head of engineering for Charge Net.
Until the end of 2015, when he left to become co-found CAVita consultancy, Dr Sweatman was Director of the University of Michigan’s Transport Research Institute (UMTRI). UMTRI and the newly established MCity, an artificial city research facility that Dr Sweatman helped establish, are at the forefront of research into implementing ITS technologies. Vehicle technology companies globally go to Michigan to use these facilities to test their products. In particular, in 2013 and 2014, UMTRI conducted what is still the largest trial of nearly 3000 connected vehicles around the streets of Ann Arbor, Michigan on behalf of the US Department of Federal Highway Administration. More recently, companies including Ford have begun testing autonomous vehicles at MCity.
We are very pleased to be able to arrange for Dr Sweatman to visit New Zealand, following a visit he is making to Australia to assist with the planning of the upcoming ITS World Congress.
The presentation by Dr Sweatman will be followed by an opportunity for discussion. The presentations will be preceeded by complimentary lunch and networking opportunity.

ICCVE The international Connected Vehicles Conference attracts a wide range of communities together. In 2015 the event is supported by APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation).
During the 5-day conference international experts on connected vehicles, practitioners and policymakers from all around the world will present innovations and advances on connected vehicles, share experiences and insights, forecast the trends and opportunities, and discuss policy, economics and social implications.

The ITS Congress and Exhibition is the world’s largest ITS industry event. The Bordeaux Congress focussed on how intelligent mobility will change our lives but also on the benefits space can bring to ITS applications.
The ITS World Congress Theme for 2015 is “Towards Intelligent Mobility – Better Use of Space”.

MINISTRY OF TRANSPORT UPDATE ON ITS ACTION PLAN
ONE YEAR ON
The Ministry of Transport hosted a series of seminars on the Intelligent Transport Systems Technology Action Plan 2014-2018.
The Action Plan was published in June 2014 and sets out how intelligent transport systems (ITS) can contribute to meeting the Government’s objectives for New Zealand’s transport system, and what the Government sees as its role with ITS in New Zealand. The Action Plan specifies 42 individual action points, for delivery over a four-year period. The Ministry of Transport will report on their progress in establishing the building blocks for ITS in New Zealand. We’d also like to hear feedback about what else the Government can do to encourage ITS in New Zealand.
MoT are also hosted two guest speakers from NICTA at the seminars. NICTA is Australia’s largest organisation dedicated to ICT research and is currently managing the world’s first vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-infrastructure communications trial for heavy vehicles.
